In 1935, Austrian physicist Erwin Schrodinger proposed one of the most famous thought experiments in the history of science. Imagine a cat locked inside a sealed box, along with a diabolical device...
Inside the box there is a radioactive atom, a Geiger counter, a hammer and a vial of poison. If the atom decays (50% chance in 1 hour), the counter triggers the hammer, which breaks the vial and kills the cat. If it doesn't decay, the cat remains alive.
According to quantum mechanics, until someone observes (opens the box), the atom is simultaneously in a decayed AND non-decayed state. Therefore, the cat is simultaneously alive AND dead — in a superposition of states!
Only when we open the box and observe does the wave function "collapse" into a single state: the cat will be definitively alive or definitively dead. Observation determines reality!
